The filters are designed to capture the ammonia odor that escapes from the Diazo machine in normal operating mode. Filters are usually packaged in a round heavily wax coated container, into these container is placed a mixture of ammonia odor absorbing material. By placing the filter in the exhaust air stream coming from the diazo machine it will absorb the odor from the exhaust. The life of the filter is dependent on how much ammonia is going into the filter and for how long a period of time the machine is running. The filter needs to be replaced when ammonia odor is noticed coming from the filter. The filters are normally found on the smaller volume Diazo machines. These machines normally have one or two super fluorescent lamps. On the higher volume diazo machines the exhaust system is vented to the outside atmosphere. Absorbers are generally in liquid form or crystals in
a powdered form. The crystals are mixed with warm water to form a liquid.
When the liquid turns blue, it has absorbed as much ammonia odor as
possible and the absorber should be changed.
